According to the Texas Office of the Attorney General (2012), “One in every five victims of human trafficking in the United States travels through Texas along the I-10 corridor.”
In addition, The US Department of Health and Human Services states that about 25% of all human trafficking victims are in Texas.
And if you’re wondering where in Texas most of this activity takes place, the National Human Trafficking Hotline has reported that the majority of their calls from our state… come from Houston.
It’s these kinds of statistics that shine light on an uncomfortable fact: Houston is home to a substantial population of enslaved people. They need a way to get out. And in May 2014, Rescue Houston stepped forward to take on that challenge. Rescue Houston operates a 24/7, 365-days-a-year helpline to reach victims of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation in the Houston area.
Receiving a call, deploying an exit team, and transporting the survivor to a safe home can happen in a timeframe of 30 minutes to two hours. Working with local agencies and restoration programs, Rescue Houston offers Hope, Freedom, and New Life to the enslaved.
Rescue Houston understands the big picture and realizes that it is going to take everyone working together to have victory over human trafficking in Houston. Their current volunteer needs include:
- becoming part of their outreach teams, offering a message of hope to victims,
- helping with administrative tasks behind the scenes,
- planning and helping with fundraisers
Rescue Houston is our August spotlight organization, and we would love for you to be part of their team to bring Hope, Freedom, and New Life to Houston.
